MCB supports Team Seychelles for 2015 Indian Ocean Island Games

Victoria, 12th June 2015: With fifty days to go before the 9th Indian Ocean Island Games start in Reunion, MCB today confirmed its support to Team Seychelles. An agreement signed this afternoon between the Bank’s Managing Director, Bernard Jackson, and the CEO of the National Sports Council, Giovanna Rousseau, positions MCB as an Official Partner of Team Seychelles for the 2015 Games.

An ongoing partnership
MCB signing up as Official Partner is a logical step after the bank’s involvement in the last Indian Ocean Island Games which were held in Seychelles in 2011. As the Official Bank, MCB was instrumental to the success of the event which is fondly remembered by the Seychelles population and all participating nations.

Aiming high
In 2011, Team Seychelles recorded its best ever performance since the inception of the Games. Playing on home soil and supported by a whole nation, it won a total of 127 medals and came second in the overall table, with only one gold medal less than winners Réunion. The 2015 Games will be a tougher ask for Team Seychelles as Réunion will be the host nation while all participating nations have beefed up their squads.

Flying the flag
As Official Partner, MCB proudly joins a whole nation of supporters. Through this sponsorship, the Bank salutes the country’s top athletes for their sustained efforts and wishes to boost the chances of Team Seychelles of flying high the national flag in Reunion. It is reaffirming its commitment to the promotion of sports in Seychelles. It also motivating the local population, and especially the younger generations, to practice sports even more. Since its establishment in 1838, MCB has always promoted sports as they vehicle some of its core values namely excellence, team work, integrity and knowledge.

Uniting the Indian Ocean
MCB has been a stalwart supporter of the Indian Ocean Island Games for more than 30 years and will be the top sponsor of the 2015 edition. This partnership is sensible as the Games are the most prominent sports event in a region where MCB is the leading banking and financial services provider. Each edition is a special occasion as it helps to unite the people of the Indian Ocean islands (around 25 million inhabitants in 2015). It gives the region’s youth a platform to express itself and showcase its abilities while providing emotional rollercoaster rides to the population of every participating country.

A unique event
In 2015, Reunion will host the Games for the third time (after 1979 and 1988). The French dependency will welcome around 2000 athletes from Seychelles, Reunion, Comoros, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mayotte and Maldives. They will compete in 14 different sports, namely athletics, swimming, basketball, football, table tennis, volleyball, boxing, cycling, handball, judo, tennis, badminton weightlifting, and sailing.

Regional leader
The MCB Group is the leading banking and financial services provider in the Indian Ocean. Through the MCB and Banque Française Commerciale Océan Indien (BFCOI) brands, it is present in all countries participating in the Games except Comoros. The MCB network includes Seychelles, Mauritius, Madagascar and Maldives while BFCOI, a joint venture with Société Générale, has branches in Reunion and Mayotte.
